What is Nose Reshaping?
Nose Reshaping (Nose Job), or Rhinoplasty, is one of the most common plastic surgery procedures performed today. Often, the structure or size of the nose is not proportionate with the other features on the face. Nose reshaping procedures can help to correct the disproportionate appearance of the nose by altering the size or shape of the nose, the nasal tip, the span of the nostrils, or the angle between the nose and the upper lip.
If you are above 16 years of age & have completed your skeletal growth, you may consider a Rhinoplasty if
- Your nose appears too large for your face
- In profile, there is a bump on the nasal bridge
- From front, your nose seems too wide
- Your nasal tip droops or plunges
- The tip is thickened or enlarged
- Your nostrils are excessively flared
- Your nose is off-center or crooked
- Previous injury has made your nose asymmetrical
Rhinoplasty is a very commonly performed surgical procedure. It is important that you have a clear idea of how you would like your nose to look and at the same time, realize that there are limitations to the procedure. The best candidates for rhinoplasty are people who are looking for improvement, not perfection. We are having best surgeons who works exclusively on the nose.
At the consultation we will explain the factors that can influence the procedure and the results such as the structure of your nasal bones and cartilage, the shape of your face, the thickness of your skin, your age, and your expectations.
Also, if you have breathing problems due to a deviated nasal septum, it can be corrected at the same time as the rhinoplasty.
Procedure
There are two basic forms of nose reshaping surgery – Open Rhinoplasty and Closed Rhinoplasty. In open rhinoplasty, the nasal skin is lifted off the nasal skeleton to allow for more exposure of the cartilages and bones of the nose. Closed rhinoplasty, on the other hand, involves internal incisions only and the skin of the nose stays in position during the entire procedure.
The exposure depends on the extent of surgery being planned. Generally for more extensive procedures we prefer the open approach.
During surgery the skin of the nose is separated from its supporting framework of bone and cartilage. Through these small incisions, depending on your requirement, cartilage and bone are sculpted. To reduce the base of the nose or the nostrils small incisions are placed at base of the nostrils, hidden in the natural crease.
If your nose needs to be built up, this can be done using nasal cartilage, bone or cartilage from other sites or synthetic implants. The skin and soft tissues then re-drape themselves over this new scaffolding.
A splint may be placed on your nose for holding the tissues in place until they have stabilized. Packing or soft internal splints are sometimes used inside the nostrils.

Anaesthesia
Rhinoplasty can be performed under local or general anesthesia, depending on the extent of the procedure.
Recovery
The first couple of days after surgery you should restrict your activities and sleep with your head elevated. This will help to minimize swelling. Generally, bruising around the eyes and cheeks is most apparent during the first five days after surgery. Most discoloration will disappear within a week.
If packing was used, it will be removed by two days after surgery.( it does not pain!) Stitches may be removed by 5 to 7 days after surgery. You may need to wear a nasal splint for a week.
You must protect your reshaped nose from direct sunlight for several months.
Occasionally, a touchup may be desired to further improve the results. Some of the possible complications include – anaesthesia related complications, swelling & bruising (temporary), bleeding, infection, implant exposure, unsatisfactory outcome (may require touch-up) etc
Risks
Complications are infrequent and usually minor, including infection, nosebleed, or a reaction to the anesthesia.
When rhinoplasty is performed from inside the nose, there is no visible scarring at all; when an “open” technique is used, or when the procedure calls for the narrowing of flared nostrils, the small scars on the base of the nose are usually not visible. Occasionally a small touch up procedure may be required.
It requires about 6 weeks for the swelling to subside & for the nasal skin to redrape to the new contours. Results improve till 6 months & stay permanent.
