Benefits of Vitamin C
Vitamin C is an excellent molecule that offers many benefits for your skin. Some of them are:
- Antioxidant: It removes negative radicals from the skin and helps in getting a good glow to the skin.
- Anti-pigment agent: It removes pigmentation and helps in getting a clearer skin.
- Collagen regeneration: It has an anti-aging property by helping in collagen regeneration.
- Smoothness and texture: When used regularly, Vitamin C provides a smooth texture and a glow to the skin.
- Anti-inflammatory: When applied after procedures, it acts as an anti-inflammatory agent and reduces redness.
Choosing the Right Form of Vitamin C
When choosing a Vitamin C product, it’s important to consider which form of Vitamin C is present in your serums or products.
- L-Ascorbic Acid: The most potent form is L-Ascorbic acid, which is said to be potent. However, it can be slightly irritating and is best for oily skin.
- Magnesium Ascorbic Phosphate: The estrified form, Magnesium ascorbic phosphate, is less potent and can easily be used for dry or normal skin.
- Ascorbic Glucoside: It is another form that can be used and is approximately 6 times more potent than L-Ascorbic acid, with better penetration.
Percentage of Vitamin C
It’s important to check the percentage of Vitamin C in a product. Vitamin C works best in 10-20%. More than 20% is not really beneficial, and if the percentage is lesser, it might be irritating. However, with newer products, even lesser forms can become more potent because of advanced manufacturing technology.
Combining Vitamin C with Other Products
Vitamin C can be combined with other products like AHA, BHA, Vitamin E, Niacinamide, and C-Weeds for a more beneficial effect.
Forms of Vitamin C
Vitamin C is available in various forms, including serum, powder, encapsulated, and anhydrous forms. The most commonly available form is serum, but the powder form maintains potency, and certain products combine it with serum to get activated. The anhydrous form is available where Vitamin C is present in small beads and gets activated when applied to the skin.
pH Balance
The pH to be maintained for Vitamin C is around 2.5 to 3.5. However, with newer products, in spite of the pH being higher, maybe around 4 to 4.4 to 6, because it’s combined with other elements, the potency is still maintained.
